Wilf the witch's dog is very much looking forward to the school skiing trip, as are his animal friends Harry, Bertie and Streaky. Weenie the good-natured witch helps Wilf to pack his bag with all the things he will need for the snow, with some sandwiches and home-made cakes for good measure. On their way to school, they decide to stop for a treat from the Ice-Cream Wizard, who sells a magical ice-cream that tastes of any flavour you want. But greedy Sly Cat and the naughty Tricky Toad, who are hiding just around the corner, steal the wizard's magic wand when he is not looking. Poor Wizard is left searching for his wand, while Sly and Toad use it to make more ice-cream than they could ever eat. Disappointed, the four friends arrive at school to find even more disappointment waiting for them. Because of the recent warm weather there is no snow for a skiing holiday and the trip has to be cancelled! On their way home the group stumble across Sly and Toad, and Wilf starts to suspect what has happened to the wand. As he sets out to return the wand to its rightful owner he has a brilliant idea and realizes that perhaps he can save the skiing holiday after all. This is a beautifully illustrated book ideal for independent readers between the ages of six and eight, and for reading aloud to younger children. (Kirkus UK)
