UK Kirkus review

First in a series featuring Horrid Henry, a little boy whose daily life concentrates every child's most unruly moments, uncivilized longings and naughty thoughts. There are four short stories here, each just long enough for a bedtime chuckle yet short enough for early readers to find manageable. In 'Horrid Henry's Perfect Day', Henry's generally atrocious behaviour is introduced. But then, Henry decides to see what's like to be perfect, like his little brother. Predictably, mum and dad are confused, and Perfect Peter is not entirely happy being displaced from his pedestal: a little role-swapping ensues. Henry's back to normal for the next story, in which he disrupts a performance of his hated dance class so much that he gets thrown out which, of course, is just what he wanted. A contretemps with a playmate and a disastrous family holiday feature in the other two stories in the collection. Simon, an American former journalist, has a good grasp of 'child speak' and writes in user-friendly short sentences with recognizable characters and enough plot to draw the novice reader forwards. Tony Ross's cartoons capture the mischief beautifully. (Kirkus UK)
