UK Kirkus review

You may strain your arm reading this weighty omnibus edition of three of Dick Francis's sharpest thrillers, but the pain is well worth it. All three books included here are excellent, and two, Whip Hand and Come to Grief, won the Edgar Allan Poe Best Mystery of the Year Award. Despite featuring the same protagonist, the novels were written many years apart, but they follow on from each other seamlessly. The first in the series, Odds Against (1965), has champion jockey Sid Halley being forced to abandon the sport after his hand is smashed. But a career as a private eye soon takes wing, and when a property dealer sets his sights on Seabury racetrack, Sid finds himself back on his own turf, but having a more dangerous time than he ever did as a jockey. Whip Hand (1979) sees Sid tracking down criminals who are prepared to go any length to ensure a win for the people they are behind. Many consider this one to be Francis's finest book, and there's certainly an argument for that: it moves at a relentless pace, and the various plot elements are adroitly juggled. Come to Grief (1995) has the traditional 'betrayal by a friend' motif, but it's rarely been given such a strong outing as here. Complete with Francis's thoughtful characterization and encyclopaedic knowledge of his setting, the thousand-odd pages in this omnibus can be guaranteed to keep you comprehensively gripped.
