The prevalence of substance misuse problems in the police cell population makes guidelines necessary for forensic physicians on the acceptable minimum standards for the assessment of drug dependent individuals and treatment intervention. These guidelines are intended to help establish what constitutes good practice, rather than a set of instructions to be applied slavishly in every situation. For this reason, they are not comprehensive, and where their recommendations are insufficiently detailed, the doctor is advised to consult other sources.
