UK Kirkus review

Perceptions and sterotypes of culture and race are brought to the surface in this moving and frank story of young Asian immigrants coming to terms with their new lives in South London. Fleeting memories of a distant and painful past are tied in with experiences of an equally hard struggle in a new world. The transition from life as a child in trouble-stricken Guyana to life as a studious teenager in lonely multi-cultural London is narrated with touches of humour, passion and emotion. Dabydeen introduces an array of imagery and fascinating interpretations, focusing particularly on Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and creates some wholly likeable characters. His use of language conjures up feelings of sympathy, sorrow, respect and understanding in a novel that is painfully realistic. (Kirkus UK)
