Synopsis

This title is based on a series revealing what life was really like in Ancient Egypt. nChannel 4/ Learning Channel's #6 million series sees Wall-to-Wall TV team up with the company that did the special effects on Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" to produce a series which was four years in the making. The combination of drama, graphics and cutting-edge research will be reflected in a beautiful book with original C.G.I. images created specially for the book. nAs well as forming a stand-alone guide to Ancient Egypt, the book also focuses on four very specific stories that give a full flavour of what daily life was like then. It also goes behind the scenes to show how the series was made and the revelations about Ancient Egypt that came to light through this. nFull colour spreads depict the 137 sets and locations and reflect the scope of the production - including the 200 extras and over 1000 costumes that were used.

UK Kirkus review

The first part of this companion volume to the innovative Channel Four film series, Ancient Egyptians, gives a whistle-stop tour from earliest beginnings through five millennia of civilization of the Nile. This works well as an overview (helped by the Chronology provided), though even the mightiest pharaohs (like military campaigner, Tuthmosis III or prolific builder, Rameses II|) make only brief appearances. With the scene set, the second part tells four stirring tales, taken from different periods - of a soldier conscripted for the Battle of Megiddo, a tomb robber, a temple murder and betrayed twin girls, employed to mourn the sacred Apis Bull. Each was featured separately in the TV series. These are real stories, pieced carefully together from scattered sources, about ordinary people caught up in dramatic events. Illustrated throughout in colour (you will recognise the impressive photographic spreads and use of computer graphics if you watched the programmes), Ancient Egypt is presented as it actually might have seemed at the time. Numerous topical insets add all sorts of fascinating details about the country, daily life, customs and religion.(Kirkus UK)
