Synopsis
'In the golden half light of a midsummer's evening, the sort where any kind of magic can occur, and often does, in the midst of a party held in a wild and rambling garden stood Pierre, teetering on highly unsuitable heels, surrounded by overripe roses.' On that midsummer evening, Pierre, the daughter of a bumbling botanist and a ravishing Italian soprano, sweet and shy and gangly as a baby giraffe, meets a man with dancing eyes...Alas, in the midst of a glorious affair, an indiscretion is committed and Pierre flees to New York. But forgetting her beloved proves far harder than she imagines...Magical, bittersweet, and utterly charming, Sophie Dahl's debut is an old-fashioned romance for a modern day world.

UK Kirkus review
This is a charming modern fairy tale of love in the form of a picture book for adults, written by the famous model and granddaughter of Roald Dahl. The language is straightforward and spare, giving the initial impression that the book is designed for children, and Annie Morris's wonderful illustrations add to the sense of timeless simplicity. Pierre, the heroine, has a mysterious background and an unworldly appearance. Appearing sometimes as a mermaid and sometimes in human form, she seems to step in and out of reality. She falls passionately in love with the man with the dancing eyes, but sadly he proves unworthy and she forces herself to renounce him. In true fairytale fashion he will need to prove his love, and so he does. This is a very successful collaboration between author and artist. The words and illustrations combine to work a compelling magic in this memorable and enchanting little book. (Kirkus UK)
