Synopsis

Enraged by the treatment of his masters, a Thracian slave, Spartacus, leads his fellow gladiators in a revolt. They escape from captivity and gather an army to face the soldiers of the Roman republic. Set against the backdrop of political intrigue in Rome, Spartacus must fight against the ever-increasing odds for survival. The speech bubbles and strip cartoon-style illustrations of the graphic novel create a dynamic format that encourages readers to engage with the characters and get involved in the story. Opening pages provide historical context about Roman Republic and the gladiatorial entertainment which was so popular. Closing pages explain what became of Rome's leaders at the time of the revolt and the changes that were enforced in the gladiatorial schools. This work includes a glossary, index and recommended further reading. It fits into the guidelines for Key Stage 2 History and helps achieve the goals of the Scottish Standard Curriculum 5-14.
