Guardian first book award 2011

The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee

The winner of the 2011 Guardian First Book Award has been announced. This year's winner is The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddartha Mukherjee.

The prize is unique, as it is judged, in part, by reading groups at five Waterstone's shops in Bath, Covent Garden, Edinburgh Princes Street, Nottingham and York. Isabel MacNeill, who co-ordinated the reading group in Edinburgh, commented:

"One of the most rewarding aspects of my involvement with this prize is seeing what previous contenders do next. Ross Raisin and Sadie Jones, for example, who were shortlisted in 2008 have gone on to great success with their subsequent novels. It really is a wonderful showcase for new talent and because it is not just fiction, there really is something for everybody to enjoy."

Last year's winner was The Romantic Moderns by Alexandra Harris.
