Axel Scheffler
The illustrator of children's classic The Gruffalo...
Axel Scheffler is a book illustrator best known for creating artwork for children's books, particularly The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child written by Julia Donaldson.
Originally from Germany, he came to England in 1982. He studied at the Bath Academy of Art and worked in advertising and publishing after graduating in 1985.
His distinctive illustrations have graced children's books from Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. In addition to Julia Donaldson, Scheffler has worked with Paul Shipton, David Henry Wilson, Uwe Timm, Paul van Loon and Toon Tellegen. He lives in Blackheath, London.
His most celebrated collaborations with Donaldson include The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child and The Snail and The Whale.
