08.06.11: The winner of the 2011 Orange Prize for Fiction is The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht. At 25, Obreht is the youngest-ever author to take the Prize. Bettany Hughes, Chair of Judges, said: "The Tiger's Wife is an exceptional book and Téa Obreht is a truly exciting new talent. Obreht's powers of observation and her understanding of the world are remarkable. By skilfully spinning a series of magical tales she has managed to bring the tragedy of chronic Balkan conflict thumping into our front rooms with a bittersweet vivacity."
Launched in 1996, the Prize celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women's writing from throughout the world. The winner receives a cheque for £30,000 and a limited edition bronze known as a 'Bessie'.
The Tiger's Wife was also selected earlier this year by Waterstone's booksellers as one of the best literary debuts of 2011, as part of our Waterstone's 11 promotion.
