Biography

Date of birth: 19 October 1946

Philip Pullman is an English author best known for the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials. Before the success of the first book in the trilogy, Northern Lights, he had studied English at Exeter College, Oxford and worked as a primary school teacher. A regular writer of children's stories, he took up a part-time teaching post at Westminster College, Oxford until the publication of Northern Lights in 1995. He has been writing full-time since 1996.

He has been awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the biggest prize in children's literature and been nominated twice for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.

He is currently working on a long-awaited sequel to His Dark Materials called The Book of Dust.
