Dickens & the Victorians: Celebrate the 200th anniversary

Celebrate Dickens' 200th birthday with Waterstones

Charles Dickens

2012 marks a milestone event for English literature - the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth on 7 February, 1812, and went on to become the most popular novelist of the Victorian era. He is widely regarded as one of the finest novelists in the history of modern literature.

The best way to celebrate a great writer is to settle down with one of their books. On this page you can choose between Dickens' most popular works - you may have watched the screen adaptation of Great Expectations over Christmas, for example - or a selection of books about his life and times - we highly recommend Claire Tomalin's magnificent biography, Charles Dickens: A Life. georgeously bound, it is the most comprehensive, revealing and sympathetic study of this great author we've read.

The Oxford University Press offer an astonishing range of wonderfully presented classic Dickens novels and a fine selection of his periphery works. The recently published Dickens and the Workhouse by Ruth Richardson explores the newly discovered link between Dickens and the London workhouse that inspired Oliver Twist.

On this page, you will also find some beautifully presented Dickens gift editions, including the magnificent Nonesuch Dickens collections, alongside a selection of intriguing Victorian fiction, and other more general books on the Victorian period.
