Waterstone's New Voices 2010
Welcome to the Waterstone's New Voices promotion for 2010. For the first time in its three-year history, all twelve of the chosen books are debuts, and this year's selection includes some incredible, innovative writing. The list includes books published for the first time as well as debuts from 2009 now appearing in paperback, that deserve to be highlighted to a wider readership.
Highlights include This Bleeding City by Alex Preston, a city trader and brother of Preston from pop group the Ordinary Boys, who has written a compelling story of an innocent swept up in the turmoil of financial and emotional boom and bust in the City. Pocket Notebook by Mike Thomas is a black comedy about an armed police officer's breakdown and fall from grace. Written under a pseudonym by a serving police officer, it is an angry and revelatory book that is bound to cause controversy. The Clay Dreaming, by comics creator Ed Hillyer (better known in comics circles as ILYA) is an inventive and touching novel about the first Australian cricket tour of the UK in 1868. The novel explores an unlikely relationship that develops between King Cole, one of the aboriginal players, and a bookish spinster.
