Welcome to
Deansgate
Located in the heart of vibrant Manchester city centre and close to the exclusive boutiques of King Street, we are officially Manchester's biggest specialist book shop, trading over three floors and stocking more than 100,000 titles.
Having once been the site of Kendals electrical and lighting departments, Waterstone's has occupied the building since 1987 creating a multitude of grand rooms in which to browse.
We have the biggest Science Fiction, Fantasy and Crime Fiction departments outside London as well as extensive ranges of Art, History and Academia. In addition we have a newly refurbished and exclusive room dedicated to Children's books. With a massive range across all genres - you should have no trouble finding your next perfect read or that special gift, but our knowledgeable team are always on-hand to share their enthusiasm and recommend titles.
As the pre-eminent city centre store for events we have rightly built up an impressive reputation, having recently welcomed celebrities including David Beckham, Tracey Emin, Terry Pratchett and Gordon Ramsay. Dead on Deansgate is our well-regarded annual festival for lovers of Crime Fiction and we also provide contributions to the Manchester Food and Drink Festival.
The branch has even appeared as a location for television shows including the BBC's 'Cutting It' and has seen film crews attend launches by Jacqueline Wilson and JK Rowling.
For businesses, schools and other organisations we have a dedicated Account Sales department to cater for corporate orders and library stock picks.
So whether you want to relax in Costa Coffee on our Second Floor overlooking Deansgate itself, browse to your heart's content, or bring the kids to one of our family fun days, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Murder in Samarkand by Craig Murray
Craig Murray was the United Kingdom's Ambassador to Uzbekistan until he was removed from his post in October 2004 after exposing appalling human rights abuses by the US-funded regime of President Islam Karimov. In this candid and at times shocking memoir, he lays bare the dark and dirty underside of the War on Terror. In Uzbekistan, the land of Alexander the Great and Tamburlaine, lurks one of the most hideous tyrannies on earth - one founded on cotton slavery and brutal torture. As neighbouring 'liberated' Afghanistan produces record levels of heroin, the Uzbek rulers cash in on massive trafficking. They are even involved in trafficking their own women to prostitution in the West. But this did not prevent Karimov being viewed as a key US ally in the War on Terror. When Craig Murray arrived in Uzbekistan, he was a young Ambassador with a brilliant career and a taste for whisky and women. But after hearing accounts of dissident prisoners being boiled to death and innocent people being raped and murdered by agents of the state, he started to question both his role and that of his country in so-called 'democratising' states. When Murray decided to go public with his shocking findings, Washington and 10 Downing Street reached the conclusion that he had to go. But Uzbekistan had changed the high-living diplomat and there was no way he was going to go quietly.
