Diana Gabaldon

Biography

Date of birth: 11 January 1952

Diana J. Gabaldon is an American author, known for the Outlander Series of novels. Her books merge multiple genres, featuring elements of historical fiction, romance, mystery, adventure and sci-fi. How does one lady find the time!

Gabaldon was born in Arizona to Tony Gabaldon and Jacqueline Sykes. Her father was an Arizona state senator from Flagstaff for sixteen years and later a supervisor of Coconino County. Gabaldon earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Science in Marine biology from the University of California, and a PhD in Behavioral ecology from Northern Arizona Univeristy.

In 1988, Gabaldon decided to write a novel for "practice, just to learn how" and with no intention to show anyone her work. As a research professor, she thought a historical novel would be easiest to research and write and happened to see an episode of Doctor Who entitled 'War Games' After watching it, she decided that her novel would be set in 18th century Scotland and following many accidental developments, the story began to develop into a sci-fi history mash up. The story then devloped into her Outlander series that we know today. The Outlander series presently comprises of eight published novels, beginning with Cross Stitch and now the eighth installment, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. Gabaldon has also published The Exile and The Lord John series.
