The author of the bestselling novel, The Return...

Victoria Hislop

Biography

Date of birth: Born 1959

Victoria Hislop is a British author, best known for her debut novel, The Island, which was hailed as "the new Captain Corelli's Mandolin."

She was born in Kent, and grew up in Tonbridge. She studied English at St. Hilda's College, Oxford, went into PR, and then became a travel writer and contributor to The Telegraph. She didn't plan to become an author until she took a holiday to Greece in 2001--she stumbled upon a former leper colony, where her first novel, The Island, was set. Since then, she's written several novels (including the best-selling The Return) and collections of short stories.

She lives in London with her husband and two children.
