Hanif Kureishi

Biography

Date of birth: 5 December 1954

Hanif Kureishi was born in Bromley, South London to Pakistani and English parents. He attended Bromley Technical High School and studied for A levels at Bromley College of Technology where he was elected as Student Union President in 1972. He later studied philosophy at King's College London.

His most famous work is My Beautiful Laundrette, a screenplay about a gay Pakistani-British boy growing up in 1980s London for a film directed by Stephen Frears. It won the New York Film Critics Best Screenplay Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay.

Kureishi's most recent book is The Last Word, the story of Mamoon, an eminent Indian-born writer who has made a career in England, and of Harry, a young writer, commissioned to write a biography to revitalise both Mamoon's career and his bank balance.

The Times has included Kureisi in their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".

Book and writing awards

PEN/Pinter Prize 2012 and Outstanding Achievement in the Arts at The Asian Awards 2013.
