J.G. Ballard

Author of modern classics such as Empire of the Sun...

Author Name

Biography

Date of birth: 15 October 1930

Date of death: 19 April 2009

J.G. Ballard was one of those rare writers whose work was so unique that he had an adjective named after him. 'Ballardian' applies to works which predominately feature 'dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes and the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments'.

He was part of the 1960s new wave of science fiction, particularly with his short stories, and his novels progressed into stranger ideas and places. His most accessible, and most well-known, novel is Empire of the Sun, a semi-autobiographical account of his childhood experiences of life in a WWII prisoner of war camp.

In 2006 he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer which eventually took his life in 2009. His last published work was his autobiography, Miracles of Life.

Book and writing awards

Guardian Fiction Prize 1984 (Empire of the Sun), James Tait Black Memorial Prize 1984 (Empire of the Sun), Man Booker Prize shortlist 1984 (Empire of the Sun), Commonwealth Writers' Prize 2001, Golden PEN Award 2008.
