Tom Holland

Biography

Date of birth: born 1968

Tom Holland is a British novelist and historian, who has written several popular works on history and presented a number of TV documentaries. He was born near Oxford, brought up in a city near Stonehenge, and educated at Queen's College, Cambridge.

Holland's first history book was the award-winning Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic. He also wrote Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom, Persian Fire: The First World Empire, Battle for the West, and In the Shadow of the Sword: The Battle for Global Empire and the End of the Ancient World, among others.

Although known for being an author of history, Holland has also written several novels, including a series revolving around a fictional Lord Byron becoming a vampire (The Vampyre).

He currently lives in London with his wife and daughters.

Book and writing awards

Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize.
