Terms and Conditions of the Miss Write Competition

1. No purchase necessary. Please make sure that your name, e-mail address and contact number are included with your e-mail entry. Only one entry per person allowed.

2. To be eligible, entries must be a maximum of 3,000 words long and only received by e-mail on or before the closing date of 31 May 2007 11:59pm GMT.

  • Waterstones.com, Little, Brown Book Group and The National Magazine Company Limited
  • and their directors, officers, representatives, advertising and promotional agencies are not responsible for contacting or forwarding prizes
  • to entrants who provide unclear or incomplete information or for entries lost, misdirected, delayed or destroyed.

3. Entrants must be over 18 and residents of the UK or Ireland.

4. Submissions must be written in English and should be part of the commercial women's fiction genre.

5. Entries to be submitted (e-mailed) as a Word document with double spacing between lines. Please do not include any images.

6. The winner will be required to participate in publicity events, exclusive first interview with the winner will be given to Cosmopolitan.

7. Submitted material will not be returned.

8. Material must be original, a work of fiction and not published or submitted elsewhere.

9. Short stories will not be accepted.

10. Little, Brown Book Group reserves the right not to publish if no entry meets standard required.

11. The prize will be provided by Little, Brown Book Group. First prize consists of a publishing deal with Little, Brown Book Group, your book featured as Waterstone's Offer of the week, plus an introduction to a top literary agent. Little, Brown Book Group reserves the first option on the right to publish the winner's novel. Five runners up will be invited to attend a lunch with the author Louise Candlish. They will also receive one book per week for a year, £100 to spend at Waterstones.com and a free Cosmopolitan subscription.

12. The prizes are non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. The promoter reserves the right to alter the prizes without notice.

13. The promoter reserves the right to amend the specification of the prize although every effort will be made to provide prizes of similar quality and value.

14. Subject to availability.

15. The winner/s will be announced at a later date. The prize winner/s will be notified by telephone/e-mail, and will need to respond immediately as to whether they are able to accept the prize. If a selected entrant does not meet all of the terms and conditions, another entrant will be selected from the remaining eligible entries.

16. This competition is not open to employees of Waterstone's, employees of any HMV Group plc company, employees of Little, Brown Book Group and The National Magazine Company Limited, or their immediate families.

17. By entering the contest, entrants consent to the use of their names, city of residence, photograph and/or image for publicity purposes in all media carried out by Waterstone's, Little, Brown Book Group and The National Magazine Company Limited, without payment or compensation.

18. The decisions of the contest judges are final. The prize must be accepted as awarded.

19. The right is reserved to terminate or withdraw this contest at any time.

20. Waterstone's, Little, Brown Book Group and National Magazine Company assume no responsibility for lost, stolen, delayed, damaged or misdirected entries or for any failure of the web site during the promotional period, for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Waterstone's on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or any web site, or any combination thereof including any injury or damage to an entrant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from playing or downloading any material in the promotion. Waterstone's reserves the right, in its sole discretion to cancel or suspend the e-mail portion of this contest should a virus or bug or other cause beyond the reasonable control of Waterstone's corrupt the security or proper administration of the contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or undermine the legitimate operation of this promotion is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and should such an attempt be made, Waterstone's reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution. Entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are illegible, mechanically MV reproduced, mutilated, forged, falsified, altered or tampered with in any way. Entrants agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions and the decisions of the independent judging panel, which are final.

21. For name/county of prize winner, please send a stamped addressed envelope marked Miss Write Winner to Waterstones.com, Capital Court, Capital Interchange way, Brentford, Middlesex, TW8 0EX after 31 December 2007. No entries should be sent to this address.

22. Entry to the competition is conditional on acceptance of these terms and conditions. By e-mailing your entry to miss.write@waterstones.com you are deemed to have read and accepted these terms.

16. The e-mail address and phone number you provide to enter the competition will be used by us to contact you if necessary, and will not be be shared with other companies. Waterstone's, Little, Brown Book Group and National Magazine Company will only use your e-mail address in compliance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and in accordance with our privacy policy.

17. Waterstone's, Little, Brown Book Group and The National Magazine Company Limited have organised this prize draw in good faith and do not accept liability relating to the prize.
