Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Biography

Date of birth: 14 January 1965

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is an English celebrity chef who's known for his television appearances and food-related campaigns. He was born in London and was educated at Eton College before studying philosophy and psychology at St Peter's College, Oxford.

After university, he spent a short time working as a sous-chef at London's River Café and started writing freelance articles for numerous publications. Shortly after leaving River Café, his lengthy television career began with Cook on the Wild Side in 1995. He has regularly appeared on TV ever since.

More recently he has become an advocate for the organic foods movement, campaigning for better care of the environment, animals welfare, and the way we source our food. He lives in River Cottage, Dorset with his wife and four children.

Book and writing awards

Whittingstall has won the Glenfiddich Trophy and the André Simon Food Book of the Year Award for The River Cottage Cookbook, as well as another André Simon Food Book of the Year Award for The River Cottage Meat Book.
