UK Kirkus review

This is a book that is long overdue. Written by Dr Penny Stanway, a leading nutritionist, it's designed to educate parents about the importance of a healthy diet for growing children - a subject that is becoming increasingly important as sales of packaged meals continues to spiral. Divided into two parts, the first section of the book deals with the nutritional aspects of food. Using the concept of the Food Pyramid (with the foods we should eat the most at the wide base, and the foods we should eat in moderation at the tip) Stanway identifies and explains each of these categories of foods. Other useful information includes a guide to what makes up a standard portion of food (which can sometimes be confusing) as well as an excellent section on food for common ailments such as asthma, eczema, headaches and tiredness. The second part of the book is dedicated to recipes for all the family. While some of the recipe titles might sound a little corny - Shark Soup and Popeye's Pork, for example - the recipes are interesting and innovative. With recipes such as Chicken and Vegetable Pies, Roasted Aubergine and Courgette Bruschettas and Chocolate Puddle Pud, there should be something to feed even the fussiest of eaters. Simple to follow, the recipes also provide basic information about the nutritional content of each dish and its suitability for very young children. With this book, Stanway goes a long way towards helping us understand why good food is important and how we can provide it for our families. (Kirkus UK)
