Sherlock returns…

Anthony Horowitz, author of the official bestselling new Sherlock Holmes book, The House of Silk announced last week at the London Book Fair that he has written a new Sherlock Holmes novel. The title?

Moriarty!

The new Holmes book takes us away from one the world’s most popular detective and plunges into the darker world of his maniacal adversary. Or does it…? Here’s the blurb.

Sherlock Holmes is dead.

Days after Holmes and his arch-enemy Moriarty fall to their doom at the Reichenbach Falls, Pinkerton agent Frederick Chase arrives in Europe from New York. The death of Moriarty has created a poisonous vacuum which has been swiftly filled by a fiendish new criminal mastermind who has risen to take his place.

Ably assisted by Inspector Athelney Jones of Scotland Yard, a devoted student of Holmes’s methods of investigation and deduction, Frederick Chase must forge a path through the darkest corners of the capital to shine light on this shadowy figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, a man determined to engulf London in a tide of murder and menace.

The game is afoot…

In a talk with Kate Mosse (whose latest book The Taxidermist’s Daughter is out in September), Anthony revealed the title to applause and the launch trailer.

The idea came to Horowitz when he thought of the first line of the book “Does anyone really believe what happened at the Reichenbach Falls?” and picks up where Conan Doyle‘s The Adventure of the Final Problem ended, with the battle at the Reichenbach Falls between Holmes and his nemesis. Giving the job to Pinkerton Agent Frederick Chase and English Detective Athelney Jones (seen in Conan Doyle’s The Sign of Four) to investigate the demise of the world’s most famous detective and infamous crime lord, the pair find themselves swept away by a mystery that takes them through 19th century London.
