Our Waterstones eleven début novel of the month is Hannah Kent‘s beautifully haunting Burial Rites. Find out more about the book in our interview…
We talked to Hannah Kent about how she discovered the real life story that Burial Rites is based on when she was an exchange student in Iceland at the age of seventeen. The tale of how Agnes Magnusdottir – the last person ever to be executed in Iceland – was condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of her lover is brought to life vividly in her début novel, which also manages to capture the brutally, beautifully, bleak landscape of the country and the hardships facing its inhabitants at the turn of the last century.
